Individual Counseling tab

Individual Counseling is a one-to-one meeting with the counselor to discuss a problem or topic of interest that may be affecting a student’s academic success. Some issues elementary students face include, but are not limited to, friendship issues, worries, conflict resolution, difficulty coming to school, grief, strong emotions, and family changes. Some techniques used during individual counseling may include: discussion, games, stories, activities, and role-playing to share matters of importance. Developing strategies and goal setting are also utilized during sessions. Individual counseling takes place during the school day at a time that is least disruptive to the student’s routine.

Referrals for students to meet with a school counselor can be made by classroom teachers, administration, parents, or through student self-referrals. Parents are welcome to call or email the counselors at any time to request individual counseling for their child(ren). While students may see us at any time for brief discussions, parental permission must be granted in order for a counselor to work with a student on a consistent short term basis. As counselors we acknowledge the importance of confidentiality as it plays a large role in the relationships we build with our students. While we do honor this confidentiality, parental contact will be made when safety is a concern.

While we provide many services for students, we are unable to testify in child custody matters. We are also unable to provide intensive, long-term counseling services to students, but would be able to provide necessary resources upon request.

Group Counseling

The purpose of small group counseling is to complement and enhance student learning by improving their perceptions, atitudes, and behaviors. Small group counseling provides a safe setting where children, along with their peers, can increase their self awareness and improve their cooperation and communication skills. Small group counseling (typically 5-7 participants) is needs based and usually meets once a week for four to six weeks at times least disruptive to the learning environment. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and requires permission from the student’s guardian.

Small groups provide members the opportunity to share ideas and learn from each other. Group topics are chosen based upon student needs and can change throughout the school year. Participation, which is voluntary and confidential, requires permission from a parent or guardian. Referrals for groups are made by parents and teachers. Priority is given to students who show an academic need. Small group topics may include:

Classroom Collaboration

Classroom Collaborations are age appropriate lessons delivered to each grade on topics related to academic success, social/emotional development, and college & career exploration. Classroom collaborations are one avenue that allow the school counseling program to be proactive and equip our students with self-knowledge, coping strategies, and skill sets that will assist them in becoming problem solvers, collaborative workers, and responsible citizens.
